Dry Needling

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used to treat muscle pain, tension, and movement dysfunction. It involves the use of fine, sterile needles to target trigger points—tight, painful knots within muscles that can restrict movement and cause discomfort.

By stimulating the body’s natural healing response, dry needling can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and restore normal muscle function.

How Dry Needling Works

Although dry needling uses similar needles, it is not acupuncture. Dry needling follows a medical, evidence-based approach grounded in musculoskeletal anatomy and movement science. It is commonly used by physical therapists to address pain and dysfunction related to muscles, joints, and movement patterns.

Conditions That May Benefit From Dry Needling

  • Elbow Pain and Tennis Elbow

  • Knee Pain

  • Shin Splints

  • Neck Pain

  • Back Pain

  • Shoulder Impingement

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Tendonitis

  • Headaches

Dry Needling at Carolina Beach Physical Therapy

At Carolina Beach Physical Therapy, dry needling is performed by licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy with advanced training in this technique. When appropriate, dry needling may be incorporated into a comprehensive physical therapy treatment plan to support pain relief and improved movement.

Unlike many clinics in the area, we also offer stand-alone dry needling sessions, allowing patients to schedule a focused 15-minute appointment without a full physical therapy visit. This option provides convenient, targeted care for those seeking relief from muscle pain or tension.

If muscle pain or tightness is limiting your movement, dry needling may help. Contact our clinic to learn whether dry needling is right for you or to schedule a focused session with one of our physical therapists.
