You Have a Choice in Physical Therapy

Many patients are told they must go to a specific physical therapy clinic based on a doctor or hospital recommendation. In reality, you have the legal right to choose where you receive physical therapy care. This page answers common questions and clears up confusion about referrals and insurance coverage.

Can I Choose My Own Physical Therapy Clinic?

Yes. Patients generally have the right to choose where they receive physical therapy services. While a physician or healthcare provider may recommend a specific clinic, the final decision typically rests with the patient.

Do I Have to Go Where My Doctor Sends Me?

In most cases, no. A referral is for physical therapy services, not a specific location. Patients are usually free to select the physical therapy clinic that best meets their needs, provided the clinic meets insurance and referral requirements.

Will My Insurance Still Cover Physical Therapy If I Choose My Own Clinic?

Often, yes. Insurance plans typically allow you to choose any in-network physical therapy provider.

Carolina Beach Physical Therapy is in-network with most major insurance plans, workers’ compensation companies, and several smaller insurance providers throughout North Carolina. Insurance terms such as “preferred provider,” “authorized location,” or “referral required” can sound restrictive, but they usually do not mean you are locked into one clinic.

Coverage depends on your specific plan, and our team is always happy to help verify your benefits.

What If My Referral Lists a Different Clinic?

That’s usually not a problem. Referrals can often be redirected to the physical therapy clinic of your choice. Our staff can assist with coordinating any necessary updates to help ensure a smooth transition of care.

Why Don’t More People Know They Have a Choice?

Healthcare and insurance information can be complex, and referrals may sometimes appear to designate a specific clinic. When someone is injured or in pain, they may focus on starting care quickly and not realize that alternative options may be available.

Unfortunately, this means many patients are never clearly told that they have the right to choose their physical therapy provider.
